WINTERSET, Iowa —
The historic Holliwell Bridge in Madison County, Iowa, located just east of Winterset, is in urgent need of repairs that could cost over $1 million, prompting efforts to have it listed as one of the state's most endangered properties.
Mike Hackett, Madison County's secondary roads engineer, highlighted the bridge's historical significance and its current state. "We're out here at the Halowell Covered bridge, it was built in 1880," Hackett said.
Hackett, who is deeply involved in preserving the county's historical structures, warned about the bridge's future. "I estimate that within ten years, Holliwell might be to a condition that we'll have to close it for foot traffic. Currently, you can't drive across it, but you can walk across it," he said.
