Homeownership is a dream for many. But the time it takes to achieve that dream has drastically increased, as the cost of a home has grown by nearly 2,000% over the last six decades. And to save for a down payment? Expect to dedicate nearly 15 years to doing so.
A recent report by Zoocasa, an award-winning property technology platform owned by the holding company for EXP Realty, tracked how much harder it has become to achieve homeownership between 1965 and 2025. This was based on historical census data of median household incomes, median sale prices of new homes and the personal saving rate.
"It's not just nostalgia that makes everything seem cheaper in the past; the data supports this," the report reads. "And one thing is clear: housing affordability has deteriorated."
