AUSTIN, Texas — Austin Starbucks baristas joined a nationwide strike Thursday, demanding better pay and improved staffing.
The open-ended walkout, which began Nov. 13, now includes about 3,000 baristas from 145 unionized stores across the country, according to Starbucks Workers United. The union accuses the company of “historic union busting” and failing to negotiate a fair contract.
Thursday’s strike is happening at the Starbucks at 4400 N. Lamar Blvd. in Austin from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Additional walkouts at the same location are planned for Dec. 15 and Dec. 17 during the same hours.
Union leaders say this is the largest strike in the coffee chain’s history, with 36 new stores in 34 U.S. cities joining the effort in recent weeks.
