BLO sorting SIR forms in Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu

The Supreme Court on Thursday heard petitions challenging the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process of the Election Commission (EC).

During the hearing, the petitioners argued that the EC cannot act like a "suspicious neighbour or policeman" by treating voters with mistrust.

A bench of Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi heard the matter.

Senior advocate Raju Ramachandran, appearing for the petitioners, said the EC’s role is to facilitate voting, not to interrogate citizens.

Ramachandran argued that empowering BLOs to investigate people merely on suspicion is unjustified. He said removing a voter’s name on suspicion is equivalent to questioning their citizenship.
