A routine inspection at a Long Island barbershop uncovered a hidden back room filled with electronic gambling machines and thousands in cash, police said.
Nassau County Police and Town of Hempstead building inspectors responded to Uniondale’s Silver Shear Barber Shop on Waverly Place around 8:20 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 10, as part of an ongoing enforcement initiative, police said.
The business was operating without a required Town of Hempstead Public Assembly License, according to investigators. During the inspection, officers found a concealed room that could only be accessed with a key fob.
Inside were five electronic gambling machines, all of which were seized, police said. Officers also recovered $17,045 in cash. Building inspectors secured and locked the business following the discovery.
Two employees—Avianela Feliz De Los Santos, 30, of the Bronx, and Ronald Jn Lubin, 52, of North Massapequa—were arrested.
Both are charged with promoting gambling, possession of gambling devices, unlicensed public assembly, and operating an unlicensed bottle club.
De Los Santos is also illegally in the United States and was taken into custody by Immigration and Customs Enforcement pending removal proceedings, police said.
Both defendants were issued appearance tickets returnable to First District Court.
