Monday was a big day for Matt Campbell .

The former Iowa State football coach had just become the current Penn State permanent head coach.

The emotional Campbell had plenty to say and many people to thank.

One of them was Pennsylvania governor Josh Shapiro, who called Campbell last week while Campbell and Penn State were still in the wooing stage.

What Shapiro said to Campbell clearly resonated with PSU football’s new leader.

“I also want to thank Governor Shapiro,” Campbell said Monday.

“His time, his words and encouragement during this journey and this process were incredible. To be able to have him take the time to call Thursday night and talk to me about the integrity and the grit and the character of the great people of this state and what this institution means to the state
