GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) - The Wisconsin Department of Health Services is not changing its guidance about hepatitis B vaccines.
The agency will continue to recommend the vaccine at birth for all newborns.
This comes after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention voted to change recommendations for when children should get the vaccines.
It aligns with research about the safety and effectiveness of the vaccines from trusted sources like the American Academy of Pediatrics. The vaccine has been tested and proven safe for over 30 years, and has led to a 99% decrease in infant infections.
Hepatitis B is a virus that can damage the liver and lead to lifelong health issues. If exposed as an infant, over 90% of cases result in chronic disease.
