WESTPORT, N.Y. (WCAX) - The Albany Stratton Veteran Affairs Medical Center has opened what officials say is the first veterans’ food shelf in New York at the Westport Community-Based Outpatient Clinic .

Dom Dominguez of the Stratton Veteran Affairs Medical Center said the idea began during a visit to the Westport clinic nine months ago, when veterans expressed a clear need.

“They said food. We need food,” Dominguez said.

The medical center partnered with the Regional Food Bank to create the VAMC’s first food shelf at a community-based outpatient clinic.

“This is part of our food is medicine program from the Regional Food Bank, where we partner with health care organizations to establish onsite pantries so that people coming in for their appointments have a one-stop where they can
