One of Alabama’s most powerful and controversial business leaders lost his attempt to resurrect a multibillion-dollar fraud case involving his former healthcare company and lawyers.
Earlier this year, Richard Scrushy asked a Jefferson County Circuit Court judge to disqualify the Bradley Arant Boult Cummings law firm from a court case with a $2.8 billion judgment against him. Removing the firm would have reopened the longstanding verdict against Scrushy from the case originally filed in 2002.
After hearing arguments in the case in November, Judge Elisabeth French denied Scrushy’s request on Tuesday, ruling that Bradley would continue to be allowed to participate in the hearing since it had been 20 years since the firm first appeared in the case.
