BOSTON —

A 23-year-old woman paralyzed from the waist down after she was struck by a stray bullet in Roxbury on Oct. 8 continues to make progress in her recovery.

Aleyah Fernandez has spent the past two months at Spaulding Rehab in Charlestown, and she's hopeful to be home before the new year.

"I couldn't even do this with my good hand," she told NewsCenter 5 as she drew with a pencil. "This is so crazy."

From pouring water into a cup to gaining dexterity in her fingers, she's eager to gain back her independence.

"I got hit in my spine, and I just remember falling to the ground, and everything was dark," Fernandez said.

Everything was dark, but she remembers what she was thinking at the time.
