MADERA COUNTY, Calif. (KFSN) -- Two people are dead following a crash on southbound Highway 99 in Madera County.

The California Highway Patrol says the two-vehicle crash happened around 6:30 p.m. Thursday, just south of Avenue 11.

Officers say a Honda Civic made a sudden move near a big rig.

"For an unknown reason, the driver of the Honda Civic lost control of the vehicle and went into the path of the big rig driver," Sergeant Sal Concreras said. "The big rig driver applied its breaks, but didn't have time to avoid the collision and went into the side of the Honda."

The two people in the Honda Civic were killed, a male driver and a female passenger, both around 30-years-old.

Neither drugs nor alcohol appear to be factors in the crash.
