Gulfport woman fatally shoots intruder who broke in despite protection orders

GULFPORT — A man was fatally shot Thursday morning after breaking into a home armed with a knife and a hammer and confronting two women who both had active protection orders against him, Gulfport police said.

Police told WLOX the man forced his way into the 21st Street home through a window shortly after 7 a.m. One of the women suffered a minor knife wound during the intrusion, but both were able to escape and barricade themselves in another room.

According to investigators, the uninjured woman retrieved a firearm and fatally shot the intruder.

The man’s identity has not been released. Police continue to investigate the incident.
