The annual Geminids meteor shower is back, promising bright and bold showers. Every December, the Geminids produce dozens and sometimes more than a hundred meteors per hour at their peak.
Unlike many meteor showers, the Geminids are always visible even under less-than-ideal skies.
Most meteor showers come from comets, but the Geminids come from an asteroid-like object called 3200 Phaethon. As Earth passes through the dust and debris trail that Phaethon leaves behind, tiny fragments hit our atmosphere at high speeds.
