After a lengthy evaluation, Akron Mayor Shammas Malik announced Friday that the city will fully renovate the Harold K. Stubbs Justice Center, opting to update the current police headquarters rather than relocate the Akron Police Department to another site.
The renovation project is estimated to cost about $67 million, though officials said the final price tag will not be known until the design phase is complete.
City officials said the aging building at 217 S. High St. has long posed challenges for police operations, including deteriorating elevators, outdated heating and cooling systems, and a layout that no longer meets department needs.
