GRAND RAPIDS, MI – Martin Martinez, 51, was tormented by the death of his son.

Nearly two years ago, Martin Martinez-Ramirez, 20, was found fatally shot in a Kentwood parking lot.

The two were best friends and did everything together.

The rest of the family – the slain man’s mom and three sisters – had just begun to be “OK with being happy again,” his oldest sister told MLive/The Grand Rapids Press.

But the 51-year-old father, killed in a weekend shootout with Grand Rapids police, never recovered, his daughter said.

“He was never the same. He was there physically, but he wasn’t there anymore,” she said.

“The light in his eyes was gone.”

The daughter asked that her name be withheld, in part, because her brother’s killing remains unsolved. She knows that her father’s death has gotten
