A Winter Weather Advisory now covers 16 New Jersey counties, as forecasters warn of accumulating snow and hazardous travel conditions Saturday night, Dec. 13 into Sunday, according to the National Weather Service.
The advisories are in effect from Saturday evening through early Sunday afternoon, with start times varying by region, the weather service said Friday, Dec. 12.
Bitter cold is expected to follow, with the coldest conditions arriving Sunday night through Monday night. Wind chills could fall into the single digits or near zero, with below-zero values possible in the Poconos, while daytime temperatures remain below freezing.
Along the coast, strong winds and rough seas could create hazardous marine conditions into early next week. Counties included in that advisory are Hunterdon, Somerset, Middlesex, Monmouth, Mercer, Salem, Gloucester, Camden, Burlington, Ocean, Cumberland, Atlantic, and Cape May, the agency said.
A separate advisory issued by the National Weather Service New York office expanded coverage to northeast New Jersey, placing Hudson, Essex, and Union counties under a winter weather advisory from 10 p.m. Saturday to 1 p.m. Sunday.
Snow is expected Saturday night into Sunday morning, possibly starting as rain or a rain-snow mix in some areas before changing to all snow. Most locations could see 1 to 3 inches, with up to 4 inches possible, especially near the I-95 corridor. Forecasters said no ice is expected, but gusty winds may cause blowing snow as temperatures drop below freezing by early Sunday.
Across all affected areas, residents are urged to take precautions while traveling.
