WILLIAMSBURG — City Council approved the next design phase for a new Williamsburg downtown library on Thursday.

The second phase of an agreement with Hourigan Construction Corp. will provide design work and construction drawings for a 50,000-square-foot library. The new library would replace the current 42,000-square-foot-building near the Stryker Center and City Square Park.

The estimated construction price for the library is $26.1 million. A modernized downtown building to replace the 52-year-old library has been a city goal for about eight years. Library Director Sandy Towers has previously said the current building does not meet the needs of a 21st century community.
