Two people have been killed in an explosion at a house in south Wales.

Police and fire crews raced to Heol Fawr in Nelson, near Caerphily, on Friday evening after reports of a blast shortly after 6pm in the garden of the two-storey property. Officers later confirmed that two people had died at the scene.

Police have sealed off the street and say it will be closed for "some time".

Specialist fire crews are expected to remain at the address this morning to complete a structural assessment of the property.

Heol Fawr in Nelson, near Treharris, Wales, is therefore sealed off and is expected to be closed for "some time".

Those living within close proximity of the blast were urged to keep their doors and windows closed on Friday while the fire service responded to the incident. The explosion was reported in the garden of a property at around 6.10pm.

Two people have sadly been pronounced dead at the scene of the explosion and their family has been informed, Gwent Police said. The force said in a statement on Friday evening: "If you live locally, please ensure all doors and windows are closed."
