ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) - A simple idea by local contractor Nathan Wheat quickly turned into a major community effort: providing hundreds of bikes to children in need this Christmas.
Inspired by the “Bike or Bust” events from the 1990s, Wheat and his wife purchased 100 bikes themselves. Within days, donations from local contractors, tow companies, and businesses pushed the total to more than 330 bicycles.
The bikes range in size and color to meet the needs of boys and girls of all ages. Donations will be distributed next week to children across Franklin County, Alleghany County, Roanoke County, and other areas in the Roanoke Valley, ensuring many kids wake up to a new bike on Christmas morning.
