As shoppers and travelers gather, they are spreading more than just holiday cheer. New CDC data shows a rise in flu-like symptoms, with doctor's visits increasing to 3.2% for the week ending December 6.
This increase marks the official start of the flu season. The majority of cases are linked to a mutated strain known as "H3N2 subclade K." This variant, discovered by CDC in August, has led to early and busy flu seasons in regions such as Asia, Europe and Australia.
Experts warn that this strain causes more severe illness, particularly in older adults.
Doctors emphasize the importance of getting the flu vaccine. While the new variant was not included in this year's immunization, the shot is reportedly still effective.
