NDA has registered a major success in Kerala’s local body elections. The alliance won 50 out of the 101 wards of the Thiruvananthapuram Municipal Corporation. The Left Democratic Front (LDF) had been in control here for the past 45 years. The LDF won 29 wards, while the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) secured victory in 19 wards.

In the elections held for a total of six corporation (mayor) seats, the BJP won one seat. Former IPS officer R Sreelekha, who contested on a BJP ticket, won the Sasthamangalam division by a huge margin.

Following Sreelekha’s victory, speculation is rife that she could be the BJP’s choice for the mayor’s post. If that happens, she would become the BJP’s first mayor in the state.
