PHOENIX — Valley hikers, rejoice! Echo Canyon Trail at Camelback Mountain is officially reopening.
The popular hiking trail in Phoenix closed in mid-October after severe storms caused significant erosion, which created unstable conditions, the City of Phoenix said. There were three loose boulders identified along the trail, and at the time, the city determined the trail should remain closed while engineering assessments and remediation plans were put in place.
The city consulted with geotechnical and civil engineers to work on making the trail safer. The plan included stabilizing the loose boulders and injecting them with expanding grout, which allows the boulders to safely separate, the city said.
