CHAPPELL, Neb. (WOWT) - One of Nebraska’s most iconic companies began on this day in history.
Cabela’s started in the town of Chappell, Nebraska, back in 1961.
Company lore says that Dick Cabela bought $45 worth of lures to sell at his family’s furniture store. When nobody bought them, he put an ad in a magazine.
He then sent everyone who responded a catalogue of fishing gear, and Cabela’s was born.
A few years after the founder’s death, the company was sold to Bass Pro Shop for about $5 billion.
