MADISON, Wis. (WKOW) – The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) has reported the first case of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in a dairy herd in Dodge County.

This marks the first instance of HPAI in dairy cattle within the state.

The Wisconsin Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory conducted initial tests, which were confirmed by the National Veterinary Services Laboratories. DATCP is coordinating with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Food and Drug Administration, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and state partners to manage the response.

The affected farm is under quarantine, and cattle showing illness will be isolated for treatment. According to the USDA, the commercial milk supply remains safe as products undergo pasteurization
