Youth baseball will soon return to Greenville’s newly restored Mayberry Park.
The new Little League baseball field stands as a revived neighborhood landmark within Unity Park, located west of downtown Greenville. Mayberry Park originally opened in 1925 as the city’s only park available for Black children during the time of segregation.
Baseball was frequently played at the segregated park by the youth and adults living in the Southernside, West Greenville, Sterling and Greasy Corner communities. At the time, Mayberry Park consisted of an ill-maintained baseball field, a simple playground and a small community center.
Now the city of Greenville has brought back the historic park as a $3.3 million Little League baseball field. Greenville Mayor Knox White said the preservation of Mayberry
