WASHINGTON, D.C. - President Trump said at a press conference Tuesday that he wants to seek the death penalty for anyone who commits murder in the District of Columbia.
The Supreme Court nullified the death penalty statute for the nation's capital in 1972, and it was formally repealed in 1981.
Trump said he believes that capital punishment is a strong deterrent to crime. However, the Death Penalty Information Center says that there is no meaningful evidence to suggest that death penalty statutes lead to lower crime rates.
