COLUMBUS, Ohio — A rainbow-painted crosswalk at the intersection of Lane and Waldeck avenues just off Ohio State’s campus has been covered in a black tar-like material.

The city received 311 reports of the graffiti on Monday , said Randy Borntrager, deputy director of the City of Columbus Department of Public Service.

Borntrager said the city painted the crosswalk last September, under the direction of the Federal Highway Administration, as part of a traffic safety study.

“It should show us what can go in our roadways to increase safety and also increase use of those crosswalks,” he said.

There are five crosswalks included in the study with different applications on the surface, including colorful paint, brick and painted bars.
