CHEMUNG COUNTY, N.Y. (WETM) – The Chemung County Sheriff's Office has issued a warning to the public about a new phone scam that has surfaced in the area.

On Wednesday, Aug. 27, the sheriff's office announced that it has been receiving numerous calls from different people reporting that they have been contacted by someone who is referring to themselves as "Sergeant Jim Ritter of the Chemung County Sheriff's Office."

After answering the call, reports indicate that the person then tells the intended victim that they have a warrant out for their arrest and then proceeds to request money for a court summons and/or civil process.
