Elizabeth Purtell, eighth-grade civics teacher from Heritage Academy in Mesa, is one of 10 finalists for a prestigious award.
Purtell was named a finalist for the Bill of Rights Institute’s National Civics Teacher of the Year Award for the 2025-26 school year.
The Bill of Rights Institute is a nonprofit that aims to advance history and civics education. The 10 finalists all earned a $1,000 prize for their nomination, with an additional $5,000 going to the winner who will be announced in September.
Purtell said that she is ecstatic about the nomination, and hopes that her recognition will have a positive impact on her students to do important work in their community.
