Four people have been seriously injured after a car crash in the New South Wales Hunter region.

At about 11.15pm overnight, emergency services were called when a car crashed into a telegraph pole at the intersection of Maitland Road and Ingall Street, Mayfield, Newcastle.

The car burst into flames after it crashed.

 Bystanders were able to free two men, aged 24 and 19, from the car before emergency services arrived.

Firefighters put out the flames and rescued two more people from the car, including a 20-year-old man and another male whose identity has not yet been confirmed.

All four were taken to hospital.

The 24-year-old and 19-year-old are in a serious stable condition, while the other two men suffered burns and are in a critical condition.
