Police have located human remains which they believe are those of an elderly man who has been missing since March.

The 81-year-old man was last seen north of Coffs Harbour on NSW's mid north coast on March 19.

Police launched an investigation, including four public appeals for assistance to locate the man and his vehicle, though none were successful.

However, on Friday police were called to a property at Dirty Creek, around 575km from Sydney.

A vehicle was located in thick scrub, and human remains were subsequently located in a search of the area.

The remains are believed to be of the missing man.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
