A 34-year-old man has been charged with the attempted murder of an 80-year-old woman in downtown Guelph.
Guelph police said the incident occurred Sunday, at approximately 9:40 a.m., when they received reports of an unconscious woman on the sidewalk in the area of Wyndham Street North and Macdonell Street.
The woman was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.
The suspect fled the scene before officers arrived, but he was arrested Sunday night.
Aside from attempted murder, the Guelph man was also charged with aggravated assault.
He is set to appear in bail court Wednesday.
It is believed the two had met previously, police said, but they were not close acquaintances. There is no ongoing threat to public safety, police said.
Police said the incident remains under investigation
