Alaska State Troopers report that 69-year-old Johnathan Casey of Arizona was last seen hiking on the morning of August 30. He was reported overdue the following day.
Casey’s phone location was traced to a remote area between Thunder Mountain Trail and Nugget Creek Trail. Juneau Mountain Rescue and SEADogs immediately mobilized, sending six crews—including three dog teams and six ground searchers—to the area.
At approximately 5 p.m. on September 1, rescuers located Casey deceased from injuries sustained in a fall near the west side of the Mendenhall Glacier. The State Medical Examiner’s Office is handling his body, and next of kin have been notified.
