WALTON, Ky. —

The Boone County Sheriff’s Office has identified the deputies wounded by gunfire during a shooting in Walton, Kentucky.

It happened on Aug. 28 at around 10 p.m., when deputies were attempting to serve an arrest warrant at the apartment of Justin Chapman, 39, wanted on felony suspicion of failing to pay child support, the Boone County Sheriff’s Office said. Advertisement

Authorities say Chapman opened fire from the top of the stairs of the apartment, striking one deputy in the legs and another in the chest multiple times.

Police identified the deputies Wednesday as Deputy Jerald "Mitchell" Wilmes, 30, and Deputy Kyle Florer. Wilmes is a patrol officer and member of the SWAT team.
