BROADUS, Mont. – Multiple agencies responded to a fire around midnight on September 2 to fight a 1000-acre forest fire in an area that had not seen fire since 1988, according to the Broadus Volunteer Fire Department.
The Broadus Volunteer Fire Department worked alongside the Bureau of Land Management and the Department of Natural Resources and Conservation to fight the fire.
The fire started due to a coal seam, said the Broadus Volunteer Fire Department.
Since fire had not burned in the area for so long, ground litter was deep.
“Its unusual for a coal steam to be found in green forest,” wrote the volunteer fire department.
The department said that they did a burnout. Cool weather pushed the warm, dry air ahead so creating controlled fires was easy, they added.
