ANN ARBOR, MI — Ann Arbor Public Schools is to join the legion of districts across Michigan planning to drop universal free meals come Oct. 1 amid the ongoing budget impasse among state lawmakers.
The state has funded breakfast and lunch for all public-school students, regardless of income, since the 2023-24 school year, and it’s been funded at no cost to families through a combination of the Michigan School Meals program and federal dollars
However, state funding ends with Michigan’s fiscal year Sept. 30, and conflicting budget proposals leave the fate of the meals program up in the air.
