ALBANY, N.Y. (ABC22/FOX44) - North Country senator Dan Stec (R-Queensbury) on Wednesday announced legislation that he said would "make an immediate impact on prison safety."

The bill would make it so that most mail could only be sent to inmates electronically. Stec wrote that synthetic drugs have entered prisons in the form of letters ostensibly sent by law firms, who when investigated turned out not to exist.

"While all citizens have a right to an attorney and attorney-client privilege, no one has the right to abuse it in order to smuggle drugs and deadly chemicals," said Stec.

Stec's bill would require law firms to register with New York state and send mail to their clients electronically, which he says they would be readily able to access using provided tablet computers.
