Welland is reeling after a young child was sexually assaulted and seriously injured during a weekend break-in, says the city’s mayor.

In a statement addressed to the community, Frank Campion said the crime is a “horrific act that is impossible to fathom.”

Niagara Regional Police said the child, younger than five years old, was seriously injured in a home near the intersection of Crowland Avenue and York Street.

Emergency crews responded at about 9 a.m. Sunday, to find the front door had been forced open.

The child was taken to an out-of-region hospital for advanced medical care.
