The Fort Erie breakwall has been in place for hundreds of years, dating back to the end of the War of 1812, and has been damaged multiple times due to severe weather coming off Lake Erie.

Storms in recent years have taken a toll as well, prompting Niagara Parks to undertake a major restoration of the barrier that runs from Old Fort Erie to the north beyond the Peace Bridge.

In recent weeks, work has been taking place near Mather Arch with a new approach to mitigate flooding, damage and road closures that occur when severe weather arrives.

Massive boulders have been piled atop one another in that area, and a new stretch of wall is set to be built between the mountain of rocks and the nearby recreation trail, said Ron Carpenter, director of capital works for Niagara Parks.
