LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) - A new group of students had their opportunity for greatness during the 24th Sames Scholars Kick-Off Orientation on September 3.

The Sames Scholars program has supported United ISD students since 2001 by pairing them with dedicated faculty mentors from Texas A&M International University (TAMIU).

Elizabeth Sames, co-founder of the Sames Scholars program, emphasized that the exclusivity of this one-on-one mentoring relationship fosters a strong desire for success among the students. She stated, “It’s like having their own personal counselor. They can talk to them about school, they can talk to them about home, or sports, or friends or whatever, but it’s kind of our way of making sure that the student stays on track, and graduates from high school with plans to go to co
