HARTFORD, Conn. (WFSB) - The American Red Cross says the nation’s blood shortage has reached a crisis level, and now governors across the country are being asked to step in.

According to Red Cross leaders, the shortage is the result of a dangerous combination as blood donations have dropped significantly since the COVID-19 pandemic.

During the height of the pandemic, many medical procedures and surgeries were postponed.

Doctors are now working to catch up, which has created a massive need for blood supplies.

The shortage is making it harder for hospitals to keep up with patients who need transfusions.

At the same time, donations have plummeted.

Some people mistakenly believe donating blood could increase their risk of contracting COVID-19, which experts say is not true.
