ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - Emory University is ending its diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) programs.
Interim President Leah Ward Sears announced Wednesday that the university will “work promptly and carefully to discontinue” its current DEI programs and offices .
Sears wrote in a message to the Emory community that the university made the decision for legal reasons.
Sears cited recent federal laws and mandates that “require higher education institutions to alter fundamentally or even close offices and programs focused on DEI.”
“The standards are clear, and we must act accordingly,” Sears wrote.
In January, President Donald Trump issued executive orders seeking to eliminate DEI initiatives.
