September is National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month, a nationwide celebration of those in recovery from substance abuse disorders. More of our brothers and sisters are dying from drug overdoses than were killed in car crashes and gun fatalities combined. We need detox and treatment centers, not more jail cells. Just when you think we are making progress, Gosnold announces they are moving off-Cape. It is definitely a medical issue, not a criminal issue.

No Cape Codder wakes up one day and says, “I can’t wait to become a drug addict.” This is why September is the time to remember those Cape Codders we have lost and to try harder to help those not only in Mashpee but also throughout the Cape and islands who are suffering and struggling
