A headteacher ended her life after being hounded by a cruel campaign of homophobic abuse in her tiny village. ‌

Caroline Grandjean, 42, had endured anonymous harassment for more than a year before being found dead on Monday near her home in central France. ‌

The respected teacher, who had been off work since last year, had phoned a suicide helpline just hours earlier saying she could no longer cope. ‌

Her devastated wife, Christine Paccoud, paid tribute last night, saying: "I don't want her to have left for nothing. We loved each other like crazy. She was a passionate teacher who knew how to create a climate of trust. The problem came from outside."
