An rare swan has been spotted in Cambridge. Chesterton resident Jayarava Attwood snapped a picture of a Bewick swan on the River Cam at Stourbridge Common in Cambridge .
Jayarava said the swan was “honking away like a goose”. He added: “It was quite melodious. The other swans were quite quiet.”
Bewick swans are white all over like Mute swans, which make up the majority of the swans on the River Cam. However, they have a distinctive black and yellow bill. They are one of the smaller swan breeds and can be seen between October and March.
In the UK, the swans are classified as red under the Bird of Conversation Concern 5, meaning the species is ‘threatened or declining severely in the UK’, according to the Joint Nature Conservation Committee.
