ELK COUNTY, Pa. (WTAJ) — Over $5 million has been awarded to help with seven abandoned mine projects across the Commonwealth, including one in Elk County.

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) shared that, as part of the Abandoned Mine Lands and Acid Drainage Grant Program, the money has been awarded for projects in seven counties.

Here is a look at what the $5,222,250 will be used for:

Elk County • $437,761 was awarded to the Elk County Conservation District for a project at Winslow Hill IV (Lime Silos O&M) for the continued operation and maintenance of two lime silos located in Winslow Hill, Saint Mary’s City.

Fayette County • $733,200 was awarded to the Indian Creek Valley Water Authority for a project at Melcroft (Pine Slopes WLEXT) due to well water deg
