BOSTON (WWLP) - In August, Boston Mayor Wu sent a message to federal authorities: Boston will not back down from their sanctuary city policies. Now, the Trump administration is suing the city, the mayor, and the police commissioner.

Sanctuary cities limit the degree to which local law enforcement can cooperate with federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Supporters say it fosters trust between local government and the community, and keeps residents safe and comfortable participating in the local economy.

The Department of Justice filed a lawsuit on Thursday, saying the city has "been among the worst sanctuary offenders in America – they explicitly enforce policies designed to undermine law enforcement and protect illegal aliens from justice."
