Two boys have died after what police suspect was a "targeted" stabbing attack in Melbourne's west.

Emergency services were called to Marble Drive in Cobblebank just before 8pm on Saturday after receiving reports a person had been seriously injured.

A 12-year-old boy was found with critical injuries when police arrived.

Despite attempts to revive the boy, he died at the scene.

A short time later, police found another boy with serious injuries less nearby on Cobble Street.

The 15-year-old boy was treated by emergency services at the scene, but he could not be saved.

Police have launched an investigation into the two deaths, which Homicide Squad detectives believe are linked.
