Running back JaQuan Kelly’s 1-yard touchdown run with 31 seconds left lifted Winston-Salem State to a 28-25 win at Mars Hill on Saturday night.

The Rams rallied with two minutes to play after letting an 11-point lead slip away in the fourth quarter.

Quarterback Daylin Lee came back strong after a costly turnover when he was sacked and fumbled with three and half minutes to go. The Lions went down and scored to take the lead, but Lee had two big completions on the final drive.

The Rams improved to 1-1 and the Lions lost their opening game of the season.

“That was a tough one,” Coach Robert Massey of the Rams said. “We preserved and last year we won some close games like this. We didn’t give up and we made some plays and we bounced back when we had to.”
