MESA, AZ (AZFamily) — A Mexican citizen has died while in ICE custody at an Arizona immigration detention facility.

Lorenzo Antonio Batrez Vargas, 32, died the morning of Aug. 31 at the Mountain Vista Medical Center in Mesa. Right now, it is unclear how he died as the investigation remains ongoing.

Batrez Vargas was detained at the Central Arizona Correctional Complex in Florence, Arizona.

On March 3, 2018, he was arrested by Flagstaff Police and charged with DUI, a Class 1 misdemeanor. He was convicted six months later.

Batrez Vargas was arrested again in Flagstaff on DUI charges on March 28, 2024. He was convicted of this charge on May 31, 2024. Then, on Aug. 2, 2025, he was arrested on felony drug charges.
